Start living your dreams

A few years ago, I was forced to take that dive into uncertainty, and leave the safety of full-time work. I’ve always been very busy creatively and have always been very focused on my career. And frankly, the thought of having little structure to my day, terrified me. I like to feel needed and feel like I'm contributing to something greater than me.

For as long as I can remember, I've been working in advertising. This is a career I enjoy (most of the time), but somewhere along the way, work began to take over my life and I lost my balance. And although it is an incredible creative industry, you work for a client and 99% of the time, you don't have the creative freedom to just do what you want. I often felt I was missing out on being truly creative.

I guess that’s probably why I started my brand, as a fun outlet where I could channel some of my interests in art and design. I began this while having a full time job, until the worst case scenario happened and I lost my job. But every cloud has a silver lining, and I took that dive into uncertainty, started to freelance and in the down times, focus on my brand. And although I'm still at the beginning of a very long journey and have probably only learnt a smidgen of the lessons out there to be learned, here are a few thoughts, that I re-read from time to time on the matter of doing what you love.

today is the perfect day to start living your dreams

Just start.

When it comes to doing what you love, the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll be getting some enjoyment out of it. Every little step takes you that much closer to doing what you love. So stop getting in your own way and take a risk. And let go of the fact that you don’t have to know everything about what you’re doing – things evolve over time.

Don’t be afraid to fail.

This is a thought I struggled with the most, but in order to move forward, you have to let go of failure. Be comforted in the fact you were just learning, growing, trying. If you live your life afraid of failing you’ll never do anything. Remember everyone gets scared, and if you’re not doing something that scares you, then it may not be worth doing at all.

Lower your expectations.

Success takes time. Have high expectations for what you produce rather than your success, knowing that it will come in time. So stop comparing yourself to other people. This isn’t a race. Your hard work will pay off, eventually. And remember, you get exactly what you put in. Work hard, stay persistent, and try not not to be distracted from your own journey. Success is a journey, not a destination.

Doing what you love is often harder than doing something you’re used to, great things never came from comfort zones. But in the end it's you that is in charge of your own happiness!
