Handmade reading list

The Handmade Marketplace by Kari Chapin
This week, I put the tools down and have been catching up on some reading about the ins and outs of running your own craft business. I've been reading everything from developing products, selling your wares, getting publicity, and how to blog to build success.

I'm reading books from this list at the moment.
  1. Craft Inc. – The Ultimate Guide to Turning Your Creative Hobby into a Successful Business
  2. The Handmade Marketplace by Kari Chapin
  3. Selling Your Crafts Online with Etsy, eBay and Pinterest by Michael Miller
  4. Blogging for creatives by Robin Houghton

I started on one and then discovered more. Books are like that, right? They're like stepping stones to other books.

These books are great for helping out any aspiring artisan, and should be read while you’re making the decision and not after you’ve quit your job and turned your lounge room into a studio. Bit by bit they will unwrap all the areas to consider before taking the plunge.

Craft Inc. – The Ultimate Guide to Turning Your Creative Hobby into a Successful Business

One of the areas that really resonated for me, is turning the handmade into mass production. There's plenty of good tips which remind me to be more realistic. "The very thing that turned you on to your craft may be the very thing that’s lost when you go into business". Determining cost of goods, market competition, and the pros and cons of wholesale and retail sales is all covered, and will hopefully help smooth my struggle with putting a value on my wares.

There is also some excellent selling tips, whether its markets, shops or online. How to write compelling listings and take great photography, grow a presence on social media sites, and how to publish a beautiful blog that is always fresh and motivational.

All are fantastic resources full of useful tips and guidelines. Have you read any of these books? What are you reading now? Do share!
