New music I'm liking…

Little May : who I found out about via one of my gorgeous friends. I had not heard any of their stuff before, but on the weekend I was invited to see them play, and was totally blown away. Thank you!

A cross between Boy and Bear and Laura Marling, the Sydney trio make beautiful and edgy folk tunes with a hint of haunting tones, and I've gotta say, they deserve all the glowing admiration they can muster. Little May are yet to release their first EP (there is only two songs that have been officially released) but I have no doubt, you'll hear their name a lot more in the future.

little miss gee market wrap up

Wow, I had a fantastic time at The Fine Design Market last weekend! It's only taken me all week to recover, so I've been a little slow in writing this post. It was little miss gees first market stall and I had such a frantic week beforehand getting everything together. Setting up a stall can be just as much fun and hard work as creating the products! I love it and I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out!

My beautiful friends helped me out on Sunday, and I can't thank them enough for all the support they have given me. It was a lovely gesture for some of them to travel quite far and take time out to help me (I don't know how I would have done it on my own).

And a huge thank you to all the lovely people who come around to say hello and buy little miss gee products! Here are some shots, taken by my one of my talented friends at The Fine Design Market.

Market weekend!

I'm really excited to announce that I will be debuting at The Fine Design Market on Sunday 8th November in Doncaster. I'm super busy at the moment getting ready for what is sure to be a huge weekend. I'll be there with my range of handmade wares + lots of other lovely new things.

The Fine Design Market is an independent design and arts market featuring Australian made and designed products. The weather is forecast to be warm and sunny - I can't think of a better or more relaxed way to get your final Christmas shopping done :) Hope to see some of your lovely faces there! x

Muji comes to Melbourne

One of my favorite finds while living in London was MUJI - a minimalistic, Japanese store that sells a huge variety of products ranging from furniture to stationary, to laptop bags, toys, cosmetics, bedding, clothes and travel accessories.

Since moving back to Australia, I've pined for Muji. I've spent many holidays searching various airports in transit, for Muji. So when I found out the good news for Australians is that you no longer need a passport stamp to head to Muji – the retailer opens its first store at Melbourne’s Chadstone Shopping Centre, I was ecstatic.

I remember my first taste of Muji, which was in London. I came out of the shop with a rather large bag, I wanted to buy the whole shop! From stationery that’s way too nice to hide away in your office drawers to elegant, natural furniture, that's reminiscent of Scandanavian in design, the label’s simple but smart designs are tough to pass over.

So trips to this Japanese retailer may not require a passport anymore – but you may need to start clearing space in your house for all the new buys you’ll now accumulate.

Making : Market

How is it the start of November?! You may have noticed I've been a little quiet lately, I have been so busy screen printing and sewing, getting ready for my first market stall. Yes that's right, little miss gee is going to market!

I'm terrified and excited at the same time, there is so much to do. I'll be at The Fine Design Market on the 8th December and will be selling my much loved iPhone cases, a range of cushions, camera straps and some gorgeous new linen tea towels.

And as it's the last market for the year, it would be perfect for some great Christmas shopping. There will also be live music and fine food!!

The Fine Design Market is located at MC Square, Manningham City Square, 687 Doncaster Rd, Doncaster. See ya there x

Pinterest picks : For the intrepid traveller

There's something captivating about maps. They allow your mind to wander to far off places, to dream of holidays, to remember past travel experiences, places and stories. I dream to one day own a house where my mind can wander forever.

From the archives : Furniture Design

Furniture Design
I was looking through some old files on my computer, and I found this. In 2001, I completed my Bachelors degree in Design where, I designed, developed and created a furniture piece relating to my interest in product design.

Furniture Design
It's always interesting to look back at my old designs to see how far I've come. After eight years of working in the advertising industry, well it's easy to say, my designs back then could all use a lot of work. I can admit, at that time, my graphic design skills were never any good. I was always better at making things with my hands and I loved to draw and paint. I've obviously come leaps and bounds since then, as I now make a living working as a graphic designer.

Furniture Design

This project was based on the idea of furniture adding value to life, enhancing enjoyment on an everyday level. It not only challenges the traditional notion of furniture as a fixture in a room, but it challenges the way we look and act within a space, by its enduring sculptural quality. In a written brief, I wrote "I enjoy creating interesting objects or graphics for everyday living. To see someone enjoy my designs, to find them being excited by how it looks or feels, or to see them wondering how it was done, is the reason why I design." A philosophy I still use today!

An extraordinary result after three years of endless creativity, late nights, stress and countless hours of study!

Featured Artist: Franck Bohbot

Paris is a city famous for love and its passion for art and theatre, and gifted photographer Franck Bohbot, takes you deep inside some of the most majestic and grand theatres in Paris, to admire their beautiful designs and architecture. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to be in a Parisian theater alone, these images will give you a pretty good idea.

It’s a sight few if any get to see. Captured when they were completely devoid of human activity – Franck's symmetrical imagines, are as beautiful as they are unique – it’s not everyday you have an entire Parisian theatre all to yourself.

You can see more pictures from Franck's ‘Theaters’ series here, or head over to the photographer’s website to view more of his work.

Pink Ribbon Day

Every day in Australia, around 50 women are told they have breast or a gynaecological cancer. Not so long ago, I lost a family member to breast cancer, and watching her battle was devastating.

I'm turning pink to show support for the cancer council's pink ribbon day!

So for the month of October, I'm turning pink and will donate 10% of all my sales to the Cancer Council to help support the many thousands of other women in Australia and their families who are affected by breast and gynaecological cancers.

Every dollar makes a difference, so please donate to pink!

Press Boot Camp : Week One

I recently joined the Australian Press & PR Team on Etsy and have participated in week one of the Press Boot Camp. This week was was all about crafting your about page.

Participating in the Etsy Press Boot Camp – crafting my about page

While I've always had an about page, it was in need of a little TLC, something I kept putting off for a rainy day.

The biggest challenge for me, was writing this page. Opening up and telling the world about your creative products and process can be daunting. I have never been really good at words and I tend to hide behind my work, and the process to me, is a little like sharing a glimpse of my soul to a stranger.

Telling your shop’s story is often a process of self-discovery, and learning to recognise your creative value is an important step in understanding your identity as an artist. I also think if you are open and honest, people will welcome you, maybe even be inspired by you, and hopefully return to your shop!

Looking at some of the other great about pages, it really makes a difference to actually see the shop owner, learn where they came from, see some of the most gorgeous studios and hear their incredibly interesting stories. To get to the heart of some more handmade stories on Etsy see WinterOwls, BelindaSaville and redtreedesigns.

Meet Ákos Major, a Hungarian photographer whose peaceful photographs and simplistic and minimalist techniques have caught my attention. I’m really loving the beautiful tranquility of his photos. Capturing such stillness, beauty, and perhaps subtle sadness in the muted shades of the landscape. You can feel the solitude and cold air in these photos and in some, you can almost taste the air.

My August break

The August Break by susannah conway

This month I participated The August Break. The August Break is designed to be a respite for bloggers.  Instead of writing, you simply post a photo each day throughout the month. There is a list of daily photo prompts, which removes a little thinking and planning from the process. But instead of sharing on my blog each day, I shared my photos on Instagram! Isn’t it nice to have a break every once in a while?
